Justin Trudeau Announces Resignation as Canada’s Prime Minister

On January 6, 2025, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his decision to step down as leader of the Liberal Party and, consequently, as Prime Minister, marking the end of nearly a decade in office. The decision comes amid a significant drop in his popularity and growing pressure within his party. Trudeau stated that he would remain in office until the Liberal Party selects a new leader through a nationwide leadership race.
Trudeau explained, “This country deserves a real choice in the next elections, and it became clear to me that if I have to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option for these elections.”
This resignation follows a series of challenges, including the departure of key government figures. In December 2024, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned due to disagreements over the nation’s financial management, criticizing Trudeau’s proposed economic measures. The opposition, led by Pierre Poilievre of the Conservative Party, has also pushed for early elections, arguing that a change in leadership within the Liberal Party does not address the policies that they claim have harmed the country. Poilievre commented, “Every Liberal MP and leadership aspirant supported everything Trudeau did over the past 9 years, and now they want to deceive voters by putting forward another Liberal face to continue deceiving Canadians for another four years.”
In response, Trudeau has requested that Canada’s Governor-General suspend parliamentary sessions until March 24 to prevent an immediate no-confidence motion, granting time for the Liberal Party to choose its new leader. Throughout his tenure, Trudeau stood out for progressive policies, including promoting diversity, combating climate change, and strengthening the middle class. However, he faced criticism for rising living costs, a lack of affordable housing, and deteriorating public services.
Trudeau’s resignation marks the end of an era in Canadian politics and paves the way for new leadership in the Liberal Party. The party faces the challenge of regaining voter confidence ahead of the next elections, expected to take place by October 2025.
